Healthy 'Back to the Basics' Habits


I've been feeling a bit unstable lately - lots of ups and downs with emotions and feelings. Have you as well? If so, you are not alone!


There's lots of instability in the world right now and we can't help but pick up on this energy. Also, it's a change of season and we often underestimate the impact of seasonal change on our physical body as well as our mental and emotional states.


When I feel this way, I go 'back to the basics' with my habits.


Take a listen to my latest video to hear some easy, yet effective daily habits that help me feel more in control.


Here's an overview of the healthy 'back to the basic' habits that help me out on a daily basis:


  • Get out of bed on a positive note - in last week's video/blog I shared a habit I learned from BJ Fogg's book Tiny Habits. The second my alarm rings and before I get out of bed, I say “today will be a great day”, which primes my brain for positivity.

  • Drink a mug of hot water and lemon in the morning - this is super helpful for digestion and hydration.

  • Breathe, meditate, sit still, or be in quiet stillness for a few minutes each day. Even just sipping your coffee in silence looking out the window is beneficial!

  • Get outside every day.

  • Move your body every day (see above point to combine two habits into one!).

  • Eat healthy – limit sugar, processed foods, take your vitamins.

  • Drink more water - invest in a nice water bottle that is easy to carry around and have it on your desk at all times for easy sips. (I recently bought a pretty 32oz water bottle from Iron Flask which I love!).

  • Notice what your body is trying to tell you – through your skin, your energy levels, your digestion, your libido, hair loss, or any other symptoms. See a naturopath, chiropractor or other health care practitioner to get help!

  • Use your free time to be inspired or to learn something. Don't watch the news and limit your social media time. Instead, listen to an inspiring podcast or read a good book.

  • Make sure to rest. Nap if you can during the day, go to bed on time, and take deliberate time away from work.

  • Limit or eliminate alcohol intake. Try the 80/20 rule - enjoy an alcoholic beverage on weekends only. Or if you're up for it, do a 30 day spring reset with no alcohol at all.

  • Connect with someone every day - a friend you haven't heard from in a while, someone in your family, or a colleague. Something I've been doing recently is leaving voice notes for people - this is a fun and more personal way to connect (plus it's easy!).

  • End your day with a gratitude 'treasure hunt'. Before going to sleep, review your day and remember and be grateful for all the good things that happened to you that day. I've been doing this for a few weeks now and it's a fantastic way to end your day and fall asleep in an energy of positivity and gratitude. I encourage you to try it!
